Average stack tournament play

Average stack tournament play is something that can go either way depending on the type of player you are and what you want to accomplish in the tournament. The main goal you should have is to make the money using your poker bonus amount first then possibly go to a final table. As you reach the final table your next goal will be to win the tournament. When playing a tournament with an average sized stack half of the players will bust out and the other half will move forward. What you want to do in order to make it through the tournament is take some calculated risks. If you can get your money in before the flop with hands like AK and Jacks or better that is a good starting point. If you start to see flops with hands like AK and miss the board you could be stuck as what to do and with limited chips you could make a mistake and bust out of a tournament. When seeing a hand like AK with an average sized stack you should be putting in a chip committing re-raise to an open raise. If you do happen to get AK in early position it could be best sometimes to put in a limp raise. This is something few players see with an average size stack to do. It is a play that makes sense and could get your opponent committed with a hand that you have beat. If they do call most of the time the hand will be a coin flip. To get a big stack from an average stack means taking a chance or two and winning a race. If you don’t take chances with an average stack you will be dwindled down to a short stack and then be forced to gamble with weaker hands.

When you look at an average stack in a tournament most of the time you will see it as a grind. It is a grind, but in certain spots you can pick up a double up and make it easier on yourself. Whenever you get pick pairs or hands like AK you will want all of the money to go in regardless of who it is against. If you bust out of a tournament with a hand like QQ there is nothing you can do because those are the hands you want to be moving all-in with. It looks a lot worse if you move in with a hand like A10 or 77 and lose. You should still be playing tight with an average stack, but gambling with hands that are coin flips and ones that you can race off. When you are winning races you can make deeper runs in tournaments and become the big stack rather than have an average size stack. Aggressive poker is winning poker in most instances with an average stack, but not overly aggressive. You should be picking up pots in position and forcing your opponent to decisions rather than have the burden on yourself. To be a successful player you need to take in to account other players stacks and whose blinds you can pick on. If you can figure out who is a weaker player you can run their blinds over, and make the correct progression through the tournament.
