PLO low to mid stakes cash games
PLO low to mid stakes cash games are a new and evolving breed of poker that has been catching on of late and is where you can make a lot of money if you play your cards right. At the lower and middle stakes levels there is a lot of dead money from players who don’t understand the game too well. Most of these players are trying to make the transition from no limit holdem, and either play too many pots or don’t make the correct bets in certain spots. How to capitalize on these types of players is very simple. You want to play pots in position and try and figure out what your opponent has. Most of the time it is correct to bet the flop and follow through with a continuation bet of 75% of the pot. That is of course if you are playing against one opponent. If you made a raise before the flop you are better off to keep with aggression. If you are seeing a flop with multiple players a lot of the time they will check to you. If you don’t have a made hand yet or are playing a hand on the come you can see a free card. Making raises before the flop in position often allow you to collect more money because players at the table will show you respect if you open for a pot sized raise.
Being able to beat the low to middle stakes games isn’t a difficult task, but in pot limit Omaha there is a ton of variance to deal with. For example, if you flop a hand like top set on a 973 board you could easily end up with the third best hand on the river. Overplaying sets in this style of game is something that a lot of players do even if straightening cards come out. Of course you want to play hands like top set, but if you start playing hands like bottom sets in a multi way pot you can get yourself in trouble. This all stems from your hand selection before the flop. One thing that many players don’t do and should do is stay away from small to medium pocket pairs. These are hand that can get you in a lot of trouble and possibly cost you your stack if you overplay them and run into a higher set. If you do run in to a higher set you are practically drawing dead or to one out; a spot you don’t want to be in ever in a game like pot limit Omaha. Hands that you want to play are your high suited connecting cards. If you open pots with 4 cards above a 9 in your hand statistically you will have a better chance to win a pot, and will avoid getting yourself in bad shape. If you can try to play big cards it plays similar to holdem. The only difference is that in Omaha you want to play draws more aggressively and go with them more often. Some boards can give you as many as twenty outs if you have the nut flush draw and a straight draw. These are the hands to chase down because a lot of the time even if you don’t have a pair you will be the favorite and be putting your poker bonus money in the pot with statistically the better hand.
